Landscape Design Approach
The landscape scheme introduces a strong green framework to compliment the traditional stone built restaurant and its surroundings.
A variety of planting types were used to create texture, seasonal interest and ecological benefit; to complement the traditional styled building form while meeting strict McDonald’s Restaurants Ltd corporate safety and operational standards.
Project Background
As Aldi relocated to Harpur Hill Road, McDonald’s identified a long-standing need for a town-centre restaurant in Buxton. The redevelopment opportunity aligned perfectly with strategic regeneration objectives and national/local planning policy.
Encon Associates prepared all required landscape, ecology, tree and Ecological Maintenance Plan to ensure the scheme aligned with planning requirements and sustainability principles.
Proposed Planting Design
Encon Associates produced a detailed planting scheme in accordance with planning Condition 14, enhancing biodiversity and seasonal character while remaining low-maintenance.
Shrub Planting (185m²) – Shrubs were selected for colour, ecology value, and year-round interest:
-
Euonymus fortunei ‘Emerald and Gold’
-
Spirea japonica ‘Goldflame’
-
Brachyglottis ‘Sunshine’
-
Ceanothus ‘Blue Mound’
-
Hypericum ‘Hidcote’
-
Lavender ‘Hidcote’
-
Potentilla ‘Abbotswood’
-
Sarcococca hookeriana humilis
Planting was set at 3 shrubs per m² with random grouping to create a naturalistic appearance.
Native Hedgerow Planting (185 linear metres)
To support local wildlife populations, we designed a robust native hedgerow planted in staggered rows with 5 plants per metre.
Species include:
-
Cornus sanguinea
-
Euonymus europaeus
-
Sorbus aucuparia
-
Juniperus communis
-
Crataegus monogyna
-
Salix caprea
-
Sambucus nigra
This hedge will be maintained at 1.5m height, offering ecological value and seasonal diversity.
Tree Survey & Replacement Strategy
Encon Associates carried out a BS5837:2012 Tree Survey, ensuring all trees were appropriately assessed, retained, or mitigated.
Tree Planting Specification
To meet Condition 15 and British Standard 8545, we provided:
-
Rooting volumes of 5m³ per tree
-
Tree pits of 2.35m x 2.35m x 0.9m
-
Rootballed specimen trees
-
Secure staking with rubber ties
-
300mm topsoil over 600mm subsoil
Any failures within 5 years must be replaced—ensuring robust landscape establishment.
Technical Soil Preparation & Installation
Consistent with best practice, all new planting areas were:
-
Decompacted by rotorvator or hand digging
-
Backfilled with minimum 350mm topsoil
-
Prepared with fine tilth top 150mm
-
Planted during the dormant season (Oct–Feb)
This ensures optimal plant establishment and soil health across the site.
