Rother Valley Country Park

The Project

Protected Species Surveys, South Yorkshire

Instructed by Quod planning consultants on behalf of Travis Perkins, Encon Associates were responsible for providing ecological consultancy to mitigate potential issues relating to the presence of protected species on this parcel of land close to Rother Valley Country Park in South Yorkshire.

The Project

The initial ecological appraisal of the site revealed the need to carry out further surveying to establish if the land was being used by Great Crested Newts (GCN), slow worms or badgers.  Following further surveys, including an extensive GCN survey, we were able to confirm the land was free of protected species and planning consent was granted by Sheffield City Council to enable the retail development to proceed.

Development Site Area: 0.6 hectares

Gross Floor Area: 12,500 sq ft

Services Provided:

  • Phase I Habitat Appraisal
  • GCN Survey
  • Badger Survey
  • Reptile Survey

Contribution to Planning Consent: Extensive protected species surveys to confirm the absence of newts, reptiles and badgers

The Solution

By being appointed at an early stage in the design process for multiple consultancy services allowed the BREEAM assessment to run smoother at Design Stage. The client found the assessment process more cohesive when dealing with a single consultant to deliver multiple BREEAM credits, rather than a large design team with the potential for miscommunication. Due to the effective internal communication between Encon’s consultants, the turnaround times have been shorter, and the benefits of this passed on to the client.

I arranged a thermal survey as we have an extended house with significant colder areas. The survey was quickly organised and comprehensive. Everyone involved was friendly and easy to talk to. The results in the report were also explained/interpreted to me in detail, which greatly assists with the understanding of where /why heat loss was occurring.
As a result of the survey, I have found a number of places where insulation is lacking or even non existent and I am in the process of correcting this.
I would recommend the service.
