Endoscopy unit, Carlisle
Encon Associates delivered VOC testing, thermal modelling, a thermographic survey, and a Building User Guide for the new £15m NCIC Endoscopy Unit at Cumberland Infirmary, in Carlisle, supporting BREEAM V6 compliance and sustainable healthcare design.

The project involved the construction of a brand-new £15m Endoscopy Unit within the grounds of the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle. Developed as part of the wider North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust (NCIC), the facility significantly enhances local healthcare capacity, allowing patients who previously travelled to Newcastle for procedures to now receive care closer to home.
Designed to meet modern clinical standards, the new unit comprises five clinical rooms and a dedicated outpatient area. Built using modern methods of construction (MMC), the facility offers a conventional and cohesive architectural style that complements the existing cancer centre. The design prioritises flexibility, ensuring the building is future-proofed to accommodate increasing demand through planned internal expansion.

Supporting BREEAM V6
In support of BREEAM V6 New Construction standards, Encon provided full reporting aligned with the Man 04: Commissioning and Handover criteria. The thermographic survey, along with our broader consultancy input (VOC testing, thermal modelling, and the Building User Guide), contributes to achieving valuable BREEAM credits under this category.
By ensuring compliance with BS EN 13187:1999 and identifying no thermal defects, the project demonstrates robust building performance, supporting energy efficiency goals and long-term sustainability.
Added Value for the NCIC Project
Through our services, Encon Associates helped the project team deliver a high-performance healthcare facility that aligns with BREEAM best practices, future growth, and the evolving needs of the Carlisle community.

What is VOC Testing?

We worked with Encon Associates in order to conduct daylight modeling and secure some points for LEED and BREEAM certification – the services were conducted in a very professional manner, in time and with an affordable budget.
They were responsive with regards to our special requests related to additional paper work, required for a taxation Russian agency. Overall, my experience with the consultancy had been very positive. I would not hesitate to purchase their services again and I would recommend Encon Associates to our partners and clients.
