The Solution
Outline planning permission had previously been granted for the construction of a new 80,000 square foot retail food store with associated car parking, petrol filling station, landscaping and access road on a 7.5 acre industrial site in Mosborough, near the city of Sheffield, South Yorkshire. A "Reserved Matters" application was needed which meant that a detailed landscaping scheme had to be prepared and approved prior to commencement of work on site. The presence of a number of mature trees meant that a BS 5837 Tree Survey was also required by the Council as well as the need for the development to achieve an overall BREEAM rating of "Very Good".
Encon Associates landscape architect and ecologist worked closely to assess the existing trees, appraise the ecology of the site and produce proposals that not only gained the highest possible BREEAM credits for ecological credits LE03 to LE06 but also met with the approval of Sheffield City Council to discharge the conditions of the planning approval.
The need to retain existing mature trees on site, provide ecological enhancement and produce practical urban design meant the client was able to engage Encon Associates to deal with all these aspects under one roof, rather than several consultants, which kept dialogue simple.
