Why Choose Us?

Encon Associates provides comprehensive Swept Path Analysis services that assess exactly how vehicles will move through your site, before anything is built.

Our expert team of Highways Engineers use specialist vehicle tracking software (AutoTURN) to test whether your development’s access roads, junctions, car parks, and loading bays work for the vehicles that will use them.
With 25+ years of experience working alongside local authorities, planners, and developers, we know what highways look for when reviewing site accesses. We can help you prove that your layout is safe and accessible for a wide range of vehicles, supporting you with everything from early layout testing through to assisting with planning submission. Our Swept Path Analysis services provide you with the evidence and recommendations you need to keep your application moving forward.

Our Swept Path Analysis Services

What we offer

We conduct highly accurate Swept Path Analysis to ensure that the entrances, internal roads, parking, and servicing areas of your development are safe and practical to use. This service is essential for helping you optimise road layouts, loading bays, and parking areas to ensure compliance with planning regulations, while reducing risk to road users.

We start by reviewing your proposed layout and agreeing which vehicles and manoeuvres need testing. We will then model each vehicle using advanced AutoTURN vehicle tracking software, which simulates real-world vehicle movements to ensure that all vehicles can enter, exit, and manoeuvre through your proposed layout. Finally, we will report back on whether your layout works, modelling any changes needed and providing clear recommendations to ensure a safe environment for everyone using the site.

What you receive

We send over swept path drawings that clearly model each vehicle’s movement through your layout, helping to determine any turning circle and parking requirements. Our state-of-the-art vehicle tracking software, AutoTURN, runs on AutoCAD, which means we can supply your design team with the simulation in DWG format.

Our Swept Path Analysis services

Uses of Swept Path Analysis

Our Swept Path Analysis services can be used to simulate a wide variety of scenarios on developments of every size. For example:

  • Larger and commercial developments – we simulate HGVs, buses, and emergency vehicles that are entering and exiting your site to test whether the junction and road layout can safely accommodate them.
  • Residential and smaller developments – we test whether cars can access the proposed parking bays and if they have enough space to manoeuvre without increasing safety risks.
  • Local highway networks – we check whether buses or HGVs can navigate the carriageway if your development could introduce new obstructions, and whether abnormal load vehicles can travel along the local highway network.

Types of vehicles we assess

We can model almost any vehicle, provided we have its dimensions. Standard vehicles such as cars, vans, HGVs, buses, refuse collection vehicles, and fire tenders are all built into our AutoTURN software. We can then create specialist or abnormal load vehicles from their dimensions. However, some specialist vehicles do have limitations, so we will confirm what’s possible at the start of your project.

Case Study

Swept Path Analysis for a care home

We recently completed a comprehensive Swept Path Analysis to test the proposed site access for a care home in Wolverhampton. The vehicles included a refuse lorry, pumping appliance, large delivery vehicle, ambulance vehicle, and a car. The results helped to determine the appropriate junction corner radii, parking restrictions required at the access, ambulance drop-off bays, and the internal layout of the site.

I engaged Encon Associates on behalf of a client to carry out a swept-path analysis. Tyler responded quickly, providing lots of detailed information and advice, and the fee was very competitive. I would highly recommend Encon.

Frequently asked questions about Swept Path Analysis

Want to know more about the benefits of vehicle Swept Path Analysis?
Swept Path Analysis is a computer simulation that shows the area a vehicle will cover as it turns, reverses, or manoeuvres around a site. This area (known as the swept path) is often much wider than the vehicle itself, particularly for long vehicles including HGVs and buses. The analysis is used to check that all access roads, junctions, car parks, loading bays, and turning areas work for the vehicles that will use them.
Local planning and highway authorities often request that you complete a Swept Path Analysis if your development will create a new access or change an existing one – or if it needs servicing by large vehicles. It’s commonly used to demonstrate whether refuse collection, emergency, and delivery vehicles can access your site safely. Commissioning the analysis early on in the design process can help you spot any problems before they become too difficult or expensive to fix.
Swept Path Analysis is used to check whether large vehicles such as HGVs, buses, and emergency vehicles can safely navigate through your site without any access or manoeuvrability difficulties. You can then use the final report to improve road layouts, loading bays, and parking areas within your design.
Swept Path Analysis assesses whether vehicles can physically move through your site layout, whereas a Transport Assessment measures the wider impact of your development on the surrounding road network. For example, a Transport Assessment will include the number of trips your site will generate, and whether nearby junctions can cope with the increased traffic.
Swept Path Analysis usually takes around 3-5 days to complete, depending on the scope of the project. If you have a larger site, or if your project needs many vehicles and manoeuvres testing, then this may take longer. We will confirm a time scale for your Analysis when we send over your quote.
