Why Choose Us?

Encon Associates delivers detailed Traffic Surveys, Speed Surveys, and Visibility Splay assessments that determine whether drivers can safely enter and leave your development.

Every junction you create or alter has to work with the traffic already on the road. We provide accurate, real-world traffic data and clear Visibility Splay drawings that meet national and local highway standards to support your planning application.
Our experienced Highways Engineers can conduct both your Traffic Survey and Visibility Splay assessment to give you a solid understanding of whether your junction is fit for purpose. And if any changes are needed, we will provide clear recommendations for improving sightlines to make the junction safer for everyone using it. From completing your initial survey through to assisting with planning submission, we’re dedicated to helping you get your junction approved by the highway authority.

Our Traffic Survey services

What we offer

Our Traffic and Speed Surveys record the number, type, and speed of vehicles in real-world conditions around your development. This data is essential for calculating 85th percentile speeds and determining any road safety measures that might be needed – as well as complying with local authority requirements.

We begin by agreeing the survey locations and timings with you based on what your local authority might expect to see. We will then install our Automatic Traffic Counters (ATCs), which are pneumatic tubes that we lay across the carriageway, and leave them in place to collect traffic data over a one-week period. Once the survey is complete, we analyse the results to give you a complete picture of the existing traffic conditions, including any potential speeding issues or areas that might need further review.

What you receive

We will provide a summary of the results in a spreadsheet format, including traffic volumes, vehicle types, vehicle speeds, and 85th percentile speeds for each direction of travel. Depending on local authority or highways requirements, we can use data from the Speed Survey to produce an accurate Visibility Splay assessment and drawing. Your design team can also use the results to inform the junction layout.

Our Visibility Splay services

What we offer

Visibility Splays are essential for ensuring safe access to and from your development, and supporting compliance with both national and local highway safety standards. They provide a clear measure of how far drivers need to see when pulling out of a junction to spot oncoming traffic in time.

We take the 85th percentile speeds from your Speed Survey and use them to calculate the stopping sight distance required at your junction. Next, we will plot the resulting sightlines onto your site layout and check whether they can be achieved, or whether any obstructions are in the way. If improvements are needed, we can provide expert recommendations for improving sight lines at junctions and access roads, mitigating any potential road safety risks.

What you receive

We will provide a Visibility Splay drawing in PDF and DWG formats that shows the sightlines required in each direction of the proposed access. This can be supported by a report and calculations that explain how each sightline was calculated from the results provided within a Speed Survey. You can then submit these as part of your planning application or use them to discharge a highways condition.

Case Study

Speed Survey and Visibility Splay for a new site access

A developer in Jefferyston needed to provide evidence that their proposed new junction would be safe for vehicles to enter and exit onto the main road. To support this, we carried out a Speed Survey to establish the 85th percentile speeds at which traffic was travelling along the road.

Using the survey results, we then produced a Visibility Splay drawing illustrating the required sightlines for drivers using the junction. The drawing provided recommendations and demonstrated that visibility was available in both directions. Together, the Speed Survey and Visibility Splay drawing provided supporting technical evidence to help the developer demonstrate that the proposed junction could operate safely.

I have worked with Tyler on a couple of projects recently and have been very impressed with the service provided to date. In an industry which typically needs information “yesterday” he has always met the tight deadlines promised with competence and diligence. On this basis we will continue to work closely with Encon and look forward to forging our relationship further with them on other future projects.

Frequently asked questions about Traffic Surveys and Visibility Splays

Want to know more about the benefits of Speed Surveys and Visibility Splays?
A Visibility Splay is the area at a junction or access that needs to be kept clear so that drivers can see approaching traffic before they pull out. It’s measured using the x distance (how far back from the edge of the main road the driver is positioned) and the y distance (how far along the main road they need to be able to see).
Automatic Traffic Counters (ATCs) are sensor-based pneumatic tubes that are installed across a carriageway to collect real-time data on the types, volumes, and speeds of vehicles using it. This data can then be used to inform road layout planning and transport safety needs.
A Traffic Survey records the quantity and type of vehicles using a road – for example cars, vans, and HGVs. A Speed Survey, on the other hand, records how fast those vehicles are travelling along the road. Our ATC surveys record both at the same time and can be used to calculate your Visibility Splays.
Speed Surveys are used to determine real-world vehicle speeds. This data is essential for designing appropriate road layouts, setting speed limits, and determining the visibility distance required for safe and efficient travel around the site.
