Passivhaus Build by Encon Associates

Encon Associates Director has taken on a self-build project, with the ambitions of Passivhaus standards. Aiming to meet the stringent standards of Passivhaus, this build is will be Encon Associates first project in this category.

Key Facts

Client: Glenn Miles - Encon Associates Director

Architect: Green 4 Architects

Project: 40 Shelt Hill Passivhaus standard

Location: Nottingham

Passivhaus Standard (also known as Passive House)

  • Maximum air tightness of 0.6 air changes per hour at 50 pascals
  • Maximum of 15 kWh per square meter of net living space (treated floor area) per year or 10 W per square meter peak demand

Having identified and purchased the land, the design is starting to take shape. Working towards Passivhaus, or Passive House, standards, requires a very meticulous approach, ensuring airtight spaces that have high-quality indoor air quality and comfort levels, by heating and cooling with minimal energy use.

The Project

Step one was to locate and purchase property and land on Shelt Hill, Woodborough in Nottingham. The architect on this project is Green 4 Architects, and with designs in hand, Encon Associates will be developing this period cottage property with barn, into a fantastic Passivhaus property. Demolition of one building, and the renovation of a second building, with extensions, this project will result in a large family home, overlooking the open fields of Nottinghamshire.

The Process

In true Grand Designs style, director Glenn Miles has acquired an onsite static home to live on site and project-manage the process over a 12-18 month period. By being onsite, Encon Associates director Glenn Miles will manage this project from conception to completion.
